Intelligent Mail Barcodes and Their Advantages
The Intelligent Mail barcode (IMB) uniquely identifies every piece of mail entering the postal system. This technology enables unprecedented visibility into the postal network for mailers and for the Postal Service itself. For example, the advanced barcode enables mailers to track all outbound statements and inbound payments, greatly improving customer communications when there is a question about a bill or payment.
The Intelligent Mail barcode also enables mailers to have more visibility into the processing and delivery of their mailpieces. Using the full-service Intelligent Mail barcode, the USPS provides free "Start the Clock" information. At some point, Seamless Acceptance also will be available and will further reduce the mail processing time requirements of inducting the mail into the postal system.
Mailers can also track mail with end-to-end visibility using the OneCode CONFIRM. Mailers know when revenue-generating mailpieces have arrived, so they can maximize marketing resources. For return and remittance mail, businesses know when their customers have mailed payments. This can improve operational efficiencies.
Move Update Regulations and National Change of Address
The Postal Service is stepping up its efforts to reduce undeliverable-as-addressed (UAA) mail. The Move Update requires mailers to update their lists every 90 days and provides options to reduce the number of mailpieces that are forwarded, returned, or treated as waste by periodically matching address records with customerfiled change-of-address orders.
Here are the changes related to Move Update processing:
- Increase the minimum frequency of Move Update processing from 185 calendar days to 90 days prior to the date of mailing.
- Extend the Move Update standards to include all Standard Mail — letters, flats, parcels and Not Flat-Machinables — as well as automation-rate and presort-rate First-Class Mail.
