GUESS WHO I AM.

This man grew up on the prairie in South Dakota. His family moved around South Dakota frequently during his childhood before finally settling in Yankton, where he attended high school.

While in school, he worked as a DJ for a local radio station, and began dating his future wife, who was Miss South Dakota at the time. Following high school, he attended the University of Iowa, but struggled with academics.

He then transferred to the University of South Dakota, where he earned a degree in political science. During his senior year, he landed a job at KTIV-TV. After graduation, he married his high school sweetheart and took a job in Omaha for $100 a week.

With a desire to be a hard-news reporter, he set out to tackle the tough issues. He was the only reporter on site when the Berlin Wall came down, the first network evening news anchor to report from Oklahoma City after the bombing, and he conducted the first U.S. exclusive one-on-one interview with Mikhail Gorbachev.

His fearlessness in the face of conflict and passion for serious news reporting have earned him numerous awards, including seven Emmys, the Peabody Award, and the Sylvanus Thayer Award.

He spent 22 years as the anchor of NBC Nightly News and now serves as NBC News special correspondent.

07 COMMUNICATION KILLERS

Effectively communicating is essential to perceived competence at your job. Make sure you aren’t committing any of the 7 deadly sins of poor communication:

  • Attempting to prove you are right. If you find yourself pushing someone to see your way or attempting to create evidence to strengthen your side—step back. If you’re correct about something, you usually don’t have to force your point.
  • In one ear and out the other. Communication always goes two ways. Respond so that the other person knows you are listening and that you care about what they are saying. Often you can do this effectively with non-verbal cues, like nodding your head or sitting in a receptive stance.
  • Holding back. Don’t edit or hold back on important topics, when appropriate. Important topics are those that are "mission critical" to the organization or matters of ethics and integrity. Effective dialogue requires honesty, not just things people want to hear.

Will Post Office Prices Change?

You’ve probably heard the buzz about the Post Office’s proposed rate increases. Here’s a brief summary of what you need to know:

  • The proposed price increase–on average 5.6%–covers most services. (For postage rates to cover the entire Post Office deficit, the increase would have to be over 20%.)
  • If approved, the price increase will go in effect on January 2, 2011–almost two years since the last increase.
  • The proposed pricing is being reviewed by the government-backed Postal Regulatory Commission (PRC), which expects to make a final ruling in early October. They can accept or reject all price requests.
